Samuel Thomas Broadway, Jr.


Samuel Thomas “Tommy” Broadway, Jr., 66, of Independence, died Sunday, March 9 at Baptist Memorial Hospital – DeSoto. Tommy was a devote husband, loving father, adoring grandfather, hard worker and a true friend.

He was born on June 19, 1947 to the late Samuel Thomas Broadway and Bonnie Busby Broadway McFarlin in DeSoto County. Tommy was a farmer and a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Independence.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Sowell Broadway; a daughter, Staci Broadway Steen (Michael); a son, Shawn Broadway (Billy Irby); two sisters, Lucy McFarlin Bailey and Darla McFarlin Algee; three grandchildren, Savannah Grace Steen, Chloe Elisabeth Steen and Ellee Ann Irby.

Visitation was held from 11 a.m. until service time at 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church on Thursday, March 13. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Debra Redd Holden

Debra Redd Holden, 62, passed away on March 7, 2014 at Baptist Memorial Hospital – DeSoto. A memorial service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 16 at Faith Baptist Church in Senatobia.

She was preceded in death by her father, Maurice Redd; her son, Robbie Holden and her brothers, Phil Redd and J. D. Redd. 

Debra leaves her daughter, Kimberley Sealy (Marshall) of Hernando; mother, Naomi Redd of Senatobia; brother, Steve Redd (Debra Sue) and Richard Redd all of Senatobia; grandchildren, Holden-Brook Sealy and Hayse Sealy. She also leaves her nieces and nephews, Stephanie S. Redd, Marshall S. Redd, April Renee Bobo, Katie Redd, Cannen Redd, Jason Redd, Justin Redd, Stacy Allen and Jennifer Dalton.

Pate-Jones Funeral Home in Senatobia had charge of the arrangements.


Henry Lee, Sr.

Henry Lee, Sr., 74, teacher, of Louisville, Ky., passed away on March 7, 2014. Funeral services were held at Independent Tyro M.B. Church in Senatobia on Saturday, March 15 at 12 noon. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Fannie Lee of Louisville, Ky.; four daughters, Vertilla Dove of Jollitte, Ill., Shawana Hamilton of Kalamazoo, Mich., Veida Haney of Tenn., and Wendy Lee of Las Vegas, Nev.; four sons, Henry Lee Jr., Timothy Lee and Benjamin Lee, all of Louisville, Ky., and Curtrie Lee of Indianapolis, Ind.; five sisters, Luvarn Mooring of Dallas, Texas, Verelean Logan of Senatobia, Bertha Chamber of Senatobia, Martha Brass of Lagranger, Ill., and Toni Thornton of Kingsford Heights, Ind.; brothers, George T. Lee of Buffalo, N.Y., Charles Lee of Senatobia, Eddie B. Lee and Maurice Lee, both of Memphis, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Felix Cauthen Funeral Home in Senatobia had charge of the arrangements.


Wilfred W. Walker

Wilfred W. Walker, 91, of Independence, Miss., passed away on March 10, 2014 at the V. A. Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn. Services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Burial followed at Mt. Zion Cemetery. 

He is survived by his daughters, Rita Freeze (Danny) of Independence and Marcia Freeman (Greg) of Independence; sons, Gary Walker (Patsy) of Independence and Daryl Walker (Jackie) of Atoka, Tenn.; brother, Max S. Walker (Sue) of Senatobia; 10 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Graham Walker; daughter, Cheryl Jean Walker; parents, Ben F. and Myrtle Walker; brothers, Elbert R. Walker and C. B. Walker. 

Mr. Walker was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. He was a veteran having served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He was a dairy farmer from 1948 until 1995 and a mason. He was also a former Director of the AMPI and also served as a Tate County Deputy Sheriff.
