Shirley Ruth Strickland Bailey

Shirley Ruth Strickland Bailey, 78, of Coldwater, Miss., passed away May 4, 2014 at her residence. Services were held Wednesday, May 7, at 2:00 p.m. at Pate-Jones Funeral Home in Senatobia. Burial followed in Bethel Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Thompson Bailey, and sisters, Lorine Journigan and Estelle Stevens.

She is survived by her daughter, Rita Sue Pounders; sons, Tommy Bailey and Terry Bailey; sister, Carolyn Bailey all of Coldwater; brother, Lehman Strickland of San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren, Richard Pounders, Leslie Pounders Wiggins, Rebecca Bailey, Arnold Bailey and Austin Hobbs; and eight great grandchildren.

Mrs. Bailey was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. 

Memorials may be sent to Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery Fund or to MS School for the Blind.

James Langston, Sr.


James Langston Sr., 75, farmer, of Como, Miss., passed away on May 2, 2014. Funeral services were held at Hammond Hill MB Church in Senatobia Saturday, May 10 at 1:00 p.m. Interment followed in Hammond Hill MB Church.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Vernon Langston of Como; daughters, Bernice Palmer, Mary Palmer, Shunta Langston of West Helena, Ark. and Ann Langston of West Helena, Ark.; stepdaughters, Wendy Vernon and Delynn Vernon; four sons, James Langston, Jessie Langston, Brandon Langston, and Corey Langston, all of West Helena, Ark.; sister, Mary Cole of Senatobia; and a host of grandchildren.

Felix Cauthen Funeral Home in Senatobia had charge of the arrangements.



Bobby (Sam) Mayo


Mr. Bobby (Sam) Mayo, 52, of Marks, Miss., passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2014 in Senatobia. 

Family received friends at a catered reception on Friday, May 2, at Kimbro Funeral Home Chapel from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. The funeral service followed at 12:00 p.m. Interment was at Longtown Cemetery.

Mr. Mayo was retired and was a member of Hollywood Baptist Church. 

He is survived by his wife, Connie Mayo of Sarah; son, Bronson (Brittany) Mayo of Strayhorn; and granddaughter, Addison Mayo of Strayhorn.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hollywood Baptist Church.


Helen Reid Moore


Mrs. Helen Reid Moore, 87, of Senatobia, Miss., formerly of Sardis, passed away on Friday, April 25, 2014 at her home.  

She was born on November 8, 1926 in Walnut, Miss. A homemaker, she also worked for Holiday Inn and Rooker Chevrolet, both in Sardis. 

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Sardis and was active in the nursing home ministry with her Sunday school class and missions in South Dakota and Alaska.  

Mrs. Moore is survived by three daughters, Becky Rooker of Oxford, Miss., Joanne Thompson (Terry) of Brandon, Miss., and Susanne McLendon (Jimmy) of Glen Allen, Miss.; two sons, Wallace R. Moore, Jr. (Sherry) of Jonesboro, Ark. and Clay Moore (Deborah) of Senatobia, Miss.; one sister, Linda Matthews (Roy) of Crowder, Miss.; one brother, Leroy Reid (Betty) of Lambert, Miss.; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.  

She was preceded in death by her husband of forty years, Wallace R. Moore and her parents, L.E. Reid and Pauline Hardin Reid.  

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Senatobia. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Sardis.

Mary Ann Sturdivant


Mary Ann “Rachel” Sturdivant, 82, of Coldwater, Miss., passed away on May 1, 2014. Funeral services were held at Hopewell MB Church in Independence Saturday, May 10 at 1:00 p.m. 

She is survived by her daughters, Lacy M. Alexander of Senatobia, Rosie Jean LeSure of Coldwater, and Ehtel M. Milam of Coldwater; sons, Chester L. Newson of Sardis, Eddie L. Newson of Coldwater, Karl Newson of Byhalia, Jessie D. Newson of Coldwater, James A. Newson of Coldwater, Willie Sturdivant Jr. of Coldwater and Robert E. Sturdivant of Coldwater; sisters, Mary Rucker of Kansas City, Mo., Onie Gant of Coon Rapids, Minn., Thelma Maxwell of Coldwater, Martha Jean Mays of Coldwater, Mattie Mae Newson of Memphis, Tenn.; brothers, Eddie B. Wright of Coldwater and Eugene Wright Jr. of Coldwater; 43 grandchildren; 93 great grandchildren and 21 great-great grandchildren.

Rodgers Funeral Home in Coldwater had charge of the arrangements.



Johnnie V. Thornburg


Mr. Johnnie V. Thornburg, 79, of Clarksdale, Miss., passed away May 4, 2014. 

The family received friends at a catered reception Tuesday evening, May 6, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at National Funeral Home. The funeral service was held Wednesday, May 7, at 11:00 a.m. at National Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in Memorial Gardens Cemetery of Clarksdale, Miss.

Mr. Thornburg, a veteran of the Korean Conflict, was a member of the VFW and Little Texas Baptist Church and owner of Sarah Trucking Company of Sarah, Miss.  

Mr. Thornburg is survived by his wife, Yvonne Thornburg; daughters, Debra (Donnie) Corder of Roscoe, Ill.; Lisa (Frank) McCool of Robinsonville, Miss.; step-daughter, Deborah (Jerry) Wages of Coleman, Ala.; son, Kenneth (Regina) Thornburg of Water Valley, Miss.; and step-son, Eddie Boyett of Crenshaw, Miss. He is also survived by sisters, Dorothy Miller of South Dakota and Georgia (Bill) Burrow of Sarah, and brothers, George (Wanda) Duffy Cook of Askew, and Tom (Tina) Cook of Machesney Park, Ill.; 12 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild also survive him.  

Mr. Thornburg was preceded in death by his first wife, Donna Thornburg, and his parents, Allison and Jessie Thornburg.

National Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens Cemetery had charge of the arrangements.



Maudine Herron Whitten

Maudine Herron Whitten, 83, of Senatobia, Miss., passed away May 3, 2014 at her residence. Services were held Thursday, May 8 at 2:00 p.m. at the Senatobia Church of Christ. Burial followed in Bethesda Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alver Meek Whitten, Jr., parents, William and Ethel Herron, brothers, Ernest Herron, Raymond Herron, Bill Herron, Johnny Herron and Joe Herron; and grandsons, Gary Rich and Len Rich.

She is survived by her daughters, Carolyn Rich (Tootie), Linda Williams (Emit), Betty Kaye Carlisle (Buck) and Cindy Darby (Jay) all of Senatobia; six grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to the Senatobia Church of Christ, P. O. Box 488, Senatobia, MS 38668.
