After taking a year off to regroup, the Tate County Fair is back and better than ever on August 21-23 at Northwest Farms.

According to Tate County Fair Committee President Don Clanton, this year’s fair will welcome a host of new additions, including a barbecue contest, increased musical entertainment, and new carnival options.

While there are typically two musical guests who perform over the course of the three-day event, this year will see performances from My Brother’s Sister, the Emma Webb Band, and the Class Act Band, as well as a night of gospel tunes performed by several local church groups.

Purvis-based carnival group Mississippi Delta Shows, LLC, who are new to the Tate County Fair, will offer plenty of new rides and attractions to keep fairgoers entertained.

Over $4,000 in cash and prizes is up for grabs in the first annual Smokeout Championship Barbecue Contest. The contest, which offers a challenger division and a backyard division, will begin on Friday, August 22, and will wrap up on Saturday night with the awards presentation in the Northwest arena.

Another change to this year’s fair is the availability of wristbands every night of the event.

The Little Miss Tate County and Miss Tate County pageants will take place as usual on Saturday, at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively. Though committee member Shelli Benton said a cutoff for registration has not yet been determined, applications will be accepted well into the month of August.

This year’s cost of admission will be $4, except for Thursday night, when entry is free of charge.

To encourage students to attend the fair after Friday night football games, fair volunteers will distribute free passes to football players and cheerleaders who attend the fair on Thursday, which will be good for use on Friday night after 9:30 p.m.

Sponsors for the 2014 Tate County Fair are Northwest Mississippi Community College, the Democrat-Record, Carlisle SynTec, and First Financial Bank.
