Education Potentate Dan Jones has decreed a medley of "Dixie" and the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" can no longer be played at the school located near Oxford. The mascot can't enter the stadium, but the school still makes money on licensing and selling images of the spurned Colonel in retail stores and on line. Apparently there is an ethical line to be drawn concerning political correctness for the purpose of obtaining television contracts and financial correctness at the souvenir shop. The reason His Omnipotence has nixed the musical rendition is because some students were yelling "The South will rise again," and that it might offend someone. I honestly do not see that as an offensive chant. In fact, I thought the whole purpose of higher education in this state was so we could, indeed, rise. I thought that was the reason for the old BAWI (Balance Agriculture With Industry) program -- so Mississippi could rise. Indeed, why did we taxpayers fork out tens of millions for Nissan, if it was not for the purposing of raising socio-economic level of our state. Don't forget approving tons of money for Toyota, so Northeast Mississippi could rise. Even as you read this, the state is looking at spending $30 million or more in Tunica to raise the standard of living there. If someone is offended by some kids yelling TSWRA at a football game, I'm sorry. I get offended when I see an American flag burned. I am offended when I stand at the cash register behind a person with $1,000 worth of tattoos, a $300 cell phone, and $4,000 worth of fancy wheel-hubs paying the cashier with my tax money via a foodstamp card. I am offended when elected Congressmen violate the very laws they pass and don't get any sort of punishment whatsoever. I get offended when a 60-year-old grandmother going to visit her children for Christmas gets "randomly" body searched at an airport while a nut kills soldiers on an Army base because his cohorts were afraid to report him for fear of being accused of profiling. There's a lot to get offended about, but yelling "The South will rise again" at a football game is not very high on the list.
