No lottery needed

We agree with Gov. Barbour, who says the proposed Mississippi state lottery is a tax on the poor. It is a mystery to us why the Mississippi House Gaming Committee is pursuing the matter, as the governor has said several times he would veto the bill. Some proponents point out the proceeds could go the education, but haven't we been down this road before? Was not legal liquor revenue supposed to cure our education funding ills? How about casinos? Didn't we hear promises that would ease education shortfalls? In a state or in a time in which money is more abundant, a lottery might be a fun form of entertainment. In today's economic climate and in a poor state, a couple of lottery tickets is the cost of a meal for a child. Let's pass for now.
