Gov. Haley Barbour is to be commended for his wise stewardship of the state's "Rainy Day Fund." He is forbidden by law to seek another term, and it would be easy for him to spend the entire reserve before he gets out of office. He would be a short term hero, but he would leave the state broke and in a financial mess similar to the one he inherited. The governor is required by law to cut expenses to match revenues, and it would be much more pleasant for him to just deplete the reserves and go home in two years. Sometimes the best road is not the easiest to travel. Thank you, Governor, for you prudence and determination.
