William Michael Jarman

William Michael Jarman, 63, passed away May 28, 2009 at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn. Memorial services were held on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Pate-Jones Funeral Home in Senatobia, Miss.

Mr. Jarman leaves his wife, Karol Jarman of Arkabutla, Miss.; his daughter, Robin Jarman of Austin, Texas; his son, Robert Jarman of Eudora, Miss.; his brother, Fred Jarman of Covington, Ky.; and 6 grandchildren.

Charles L. "Burney" King, Sr.

Charles L. 'Burney' King, Sr., died Sunday, May 31, 2009 after a battle with lung cancer.

Burney was born March 16, 1938 in Tate County, Miss. He attended Thyatira High School and married Virginia Wilhelm, also from Tate County. Burney and Virginia, with their young family, lived and worked in Mississippi, California, and then back in Mississippi, The children grew to adulthood in West Jackson, where the family attended Midway Baptist Church.

Burney was an automobile salesman most of his professional life. Later in life, after moving to the country, he became a county school bus driver, had a newspaper route, and most importantly for his friends and neighbors, started planting larger gardens each year. He became well-known as having the earliest home-grown tomatoes of anybody around. Burney was very generous with all his garden produce--even his popular tomato relish, which he cooked and canned all by himself. His oldest grandchild especially liked to eat his speckled butterbeans.

Burney was an active member and supporter of Bethesda Baptist Church for many years. He loved to hunt and fish and watch ball games as hobbies. He was a good cook and provided his special dishes for family gatherings over the years.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Virginia; his daughter Charlotte Faye; and two brothers.

He is survived by his sons C. L.(Chuck) King, Jr., Burney Clay King (Hannah), Cameron King, and his special loves --grandchildren Ashton Elizabeth King, Chance King, and Hannah Clay King. Also surviving are five sisters, numerous nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.

Services by Chancellor Funeral Home in Byram were held Wednesday at Bethesda Baptist Church on Midway Road at 11 a.m.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Ministries at Ridgeland, Miss.

Alva Hines Powell

Alva Hines Powell, 96, passed away May 20, 2009 at her home in the Hopewell Community near Walnut, Miss.

She spent most of her life as a professional educator in Benton, Tippah, Tate Counties and retired from Marshall County Schools in the seventies. She was born to Frank Leslie and Ammie Daniel Hines on December 17, 1912 in the Hopewell Community.

She is survived by three daughters, June Powell,M.D. of Chalybeate, Miss., Linda Spaulding (Nyle) of Hopewell Community, Christine Allen (Adrian) of Clinton, Miss.; one foster daughter, Patricia McHann Tyus of North Carolina; one brother, Curtis Hines (Marjorie) of Hopewell; two sisters, Edith H. Martin (Joe) and Ruth Cook both of Ripley, Miss.; 7 grandchildren, Charles Boswell (Sara) of Tampa, Fla., William Drewry Boswell (Candice) of Terrell, Texas, Bryan Spaulding (Jan) of Tampa, Fla., Barbara Spaulding Clark (John) of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Manassa Regina Alva Ammie Vivirski of Hopewell, Loryn Davis of Hattiesburg, Miss., Alix Williams (Charles) of Jackson, Miss.; 9 great-grandchildren, Gibson and Riley Boswell, Fender Boswell, Lynn and Lory Spaulding, Krysten and Sean Clark and Cameron and Graham Williams; a host of nieces and nephews; and her beloved caregiver, Cindy Walker of the Hamilton Community and Magnolia Hospice Care - Wanda Carper and Melissa McKewen of Corinth.

She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-five years, William Guy Powell; her parents, Frank Leslie and Ammie Daniel Hines; sister, Earlyne Hines Burton; and a brother, Daniel Hines.

Services were held Saturday, May 23, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Hopewell Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Nyle Spaulding officiating, assisting Bro. Richie Lockhart and Rev. Wayne Campbell. Burial was in Hopewell Community Cemetery. McBridge Funeral Home in Ripley, Miss. had charge of the services.

Pallbearers were her nephews, Frank Leslie Hines, II, Frank Leslie Hines, III, Tamlin Hines, Jeffery Skinner, David Hines Cook, Joe Hines Martin, Barry Cook, Brad Campbell, and Brett Campbell.

Memorials may be sent to Hopewell Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 1351 Saulsberry Road, Walnut, MS 38683.

Mary Kathryn Ward

Mrs. Mary Kathryn Ward of Fayetteville, Ga. died Sunday May 31, 2009. Mrs. Ward, a homemaker, was previously a Flight Attendant for Southern Airways. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Samuel F. Ward and her brother, Edwin Neely Scott.

She is survived by sons, Scott Ward and his wife Heather of Senoia; Pat Ward and his wife Lisa of Cumming; grandchildren, Kaitlyn Ward, Carson Ward, Neely Ward and Lucy Ward; Brother, Danny Scott of Coldwater, Miss.; step-children, Merry Mac Watson; David Ward; Jann Gerstner; Jim Ward and numerous step grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Mowell Funeral Home (Fayetteville) with Rev. Wallace McAbee officiating. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Graveside services were held Wednesday June 3, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. at the Decatur City Cemetery in Decatur, Tenn.

Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home, Fayetteville had charge of the arrangements.

Alvin McCoy Woolfolk

Alvin McCoy Woolfolk, 73, passed away May 29, 2009 at his home in Coldwater, Miss. Services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2 at Pate-Jones Funeral Home in Senatobia. Burial followed at Magnolia Cemetery in Coldwater, Miss.

Mr. Woolfolk was of baptist faith. He was a retired butcher having worked in Coldwater and Arkabutla. He was a graduate of the University of Mississippi and was a former teacher at Northwest Academy. He was a caregiver for his parents, uncle and aunt.

He is survived by six sisters, Marion Neal (Charles) of Coldwater, Janette Jackson (Harvey) of Hernando, Faye Savage (Heyward) of Nesbit, Linda White (John) of Hernando, Sherry Crawford (Bill) of Batesville, Debbie McClain (Phil) of Hernando; a brother, David Woolfolk (Sue) and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, W.J. and Lura Woolfolk; his uncle, Hiram Roberts; and his aunt, Vera Roberts. Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society, P. O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718.
