| On January 23, the girls from Coldwater traveled to Ackerman to participate in the Middle Mississippi Girls Classic and the "shootout" consisted of some of the best teams in the state. The Lady Cougars faced the Lady Lions from Weir and Coldwater trailed by five points after the first period. Despite the slow start, the Lady Cougars were able to regroup and outscored the Lady Lions 17-4 in the second period and never looked back. Jerontay Clemmons put up thirty-six points and nine rebounds to lead the Lady Cougars to a 60-46 victory. Charmaine Stackhous added another eleven points and junior, Taylor Sandridge, stepped in and also grabbed nine rebounds.
Then Coldwater returned home to host Ray Brooks and continued their hot streak when they dominated the Lady Tigers, 70-35. Four Lady Cougars scored in the double digits as they poured on the points. Clemmons led the team with nineteen points and twelve rebounds followed by Stackhouse with fifteen points. Shelby Jamison added another thirteen points and senior, Jel Hawkins, scored twelve points and pulled in eight rebounds. "We gave a great defensive effort to pull out a division win at home," said Coach Spiva. It looks like the Lady Cougars are peaking just in time. They're sitting at second place in the division and playing extremely well. Look for the Lady Cougars to carry this momentum over into postseason play!
In boys' action....
The Cougars traveled to Cleveland to take on the Fighting Irish from St Joseph and pulled out a thirty-four point win. Senior, Greg Ramsey, led the offensive attack with twenty-one points and Darius Davis added another eighteen points and seven rebounds in the 65-31 win. "It's always good to go on the road and win a district game this late in the season," said Coach Spiva.
Coldwater then returned home to face Ray Brooks in a key district game, but the Cougars weren't able to get things going on offense and lost to the Tigers 70-56. "We just didn't get things done like we're supposed to," said Spiva. Darius Davis led the team with eighteen points and Ramsey added another fifteen. Senior, Quandarius Sipp, led the team with nine rebounds and also scored eight points. The Cougars are also in second place in their division, but need to win out to remain in that spot.
