Leaders hear tips for winning retail

Retail real estate developer Mark Utley spoke to leaders from different areas of Tate County last week at a retail recruitment seminar sponsored by the Tate County Economic Development Foundation.
Leaders from several different areas of Tate County life got to hear some good news and some bad news about future retail development.

The good news: Senatobia, Coldwater, and Tate County have a lot to offer potential retailers.

The bad news: we aren't getting the message across effectively.

Retail development experts Mark Utley and Shawn Massey gave pointers on how to more effectively market the area to retail companies.

Utley, whose company owns several retail centers in the area, said that to become somewhere that retailers want to locate, the area needs to focus on two things: growth and finding our identity.

"You needs to crystallize your vision for what you want Senatobia to be," he said.

Massey added that the right tools can make all the difference to a retailer. He said that those working to promote development needed to have the right materials, such as maps and housing information, to persuade retailers that their customers would be here.

"They know their customers better than you do," he said.

The seminar was attended by local lawmakers, bankers, real estate developers, and many others.
