If the situation facing Golden Pond homeowners were put into prose, it might be as long as Homer's Odyssey. The subdivision suffered severe flooding last year, and those whose homes are there have been trying for months to find some relief. Mary Brooks, who has been representing the group over the past several months in meetings with local officials, came again to the Tate County Board of Supervisors at their February 1 meeting. Brooks said that she had received a letter from the Mississippi Department of Transportation Commissioner Richard Allen, dated January 25, saying that the agency wanted to meet with local authorities at the site to discuss work the county could do on their right-of-ways. County officials have said in past meetings that they believe an earthen wall is obstructing the flow of water through culverts in the area, but they needed MDOT's permission to work on their right-of-ways before a remedy could be found. County Administrator Rufus Warren said that county engineer Larry Britt would be the contact person with MDOT, and that the agency would review the county's plans to make sure they would not cause more problems elsewhere. The most likely scenario, Warren said, was that the final plan would be a combination of the county's ideas with MDOT's ideas. "Their engineers, and our engineers, will hammer out a plan," he explained. When asked what her next step was, Warren advised Brooks to give Britt a few days to look over the information and to contact him. Brooks added that she had attempted to contact state legislators but had not gotten are response. The group of homeowners is hoping to get a solution in place before the spring brings heavy rains. Fire fatality Tate County Fire Coordinator Kenny Kopf reported a fire fatality to board members. According to Kopf, the incident happened in the early hours of that morning, near the DeSoto County line. An 85-year-old man, later identified by authorities as Emmitt Floyd, was the victim. His wife made it out of the fire. The cause of the fire had not been determined by late last week. District Four Supervisor Cecil Howell was absent from the meeting. All other board members were present.
