    New year, new rules

Among the changes coming to Tate County Schools this year: no uniforms, longer days, and higher lunch prices, in addition to shuffled classes and fewer staff.

Board members had moved at the July 20 meeting to nix the uniform policy, because academic achievement seemed to be improving.

"Students will be allowed to wear shirts of any color as long as they have a collar," State-appointed conservator James Malone said. "They will be allowed to wear school t-shirts that are representative of the school they attend. Students must adhere to the dress code policy as set forth in the student handbook. This was changed as a reward for the students. The students and faculty are to be commended for their efforts in focusing on improving academics at TCSD during the school year."

Students at all the high schools and Strayhorn Elementary will begin class at 7:35 a.m. and bus riders will be dismissed first at 3:10 p.m., he said. Other schools were still working on their schedules late last week. Bus riders at all schools will leave first.

"All schools in conservatorship in Mississippi extended the length of the school day for classroom instruction," Malone explained.

Prices for those who pay full price for lunch are rising 50 cents, to $2 per meal. Students will not be allowed to charge meals, but parents may pay in advance.

"The Tate County School District is undergoing many transformations again this year. Finances are now a driving force in the decisions that are being made to help the district to continue to function," Malone said. "There has been a reduction in personnel district wide which has resulted in less faculty and assistant teachers."

"These actions are being undertaken by many districts across the state that seem to be facing a similar dilemma with finances," he added.

The above comment makes me question Freedom of Speech. Some people shoul be required to have a license just to speak.
