When the United States track team lines up in the blocks for the men's 4x100-meter relay this week, Coldwater native Trell Kimmons will be leading the charge. Known for his acceleration off of the blocks, or from the starting position, Kimmons has been selected as the lead leg of the men's relay team, and the United States team is counting on Kimmons to give his country a strong start to the race. The U.S. men's 4x100 team is made up of Kimmons, along with Justin Gatlin, Tyson Gay and Ryan Bailey. The men's 4x100 is expected to begin Friday, Aug. 10, with the qualifying heats at 1:45 p.m. CST. The final round of the event is scheduled to begin Saturday, Aug. 11, at 3:00 p.m. CST. Although an Olympic medal is paramount to an athlete, Kimmons has already put together a career year in 2012, previously finishing with a world-leading time of 6.45 seconds en route to winning the 60-meter dash and the United States Indoor Championships. He finished fourth at the world indoor championships with a time of 6.60 seconds, but his time from the U.S. finals has not been beaten. The United States' greatest competition in the event is expected to be the Jamaican team, which features Usain Bolt, a multiple world record holder, and Yohan Blake, who has twice bested Bolt in events leading up to the Olympics. Other notable Mississippians competing in the track and field games include: * Aries Merritt, who grew up in Grenada as a child, is expected to compete for the United States in the 110-meter hurdles. The event is scheduled to begin with heats on Tuesday, Aug. 7 at 4:10 a.m. CST. Semi-finals are scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 8 at 1:15 p.m. CST. Finals are scheduled for 3:15 CST on Aug. 8. * Isiah Young, an Ole Miss sprinter, is expected to compete in the 200-meter dash, with a heat round scheduled to begin on Tuesday, Aug. 7 at 5:50 a.m., with a semi-final on Aug. 8 at 2:10 p.m. CST and a final on Aug. 9 at 2:55 p.m. CST. * Brittney Reese, a former Ole Miss athlete, is expected to compete in the women's long jump, with a qualifying round slated to begin on Tuesday, Aug. 7 at 1:05 p.m. CST. A final round is scheduled for Aug. 8 at 3:00 p.m. CST. For more information on Track and Field event scheduling, visit www.usatf.org.
