    Senatobia alcohol vote Tuesday

Tuesday is likely to shape the future of the City of Senatobia, as its residents will vote to determine whether or not to permit the sale of alcohol within the city limits.

The vote, on Jan. 29, which will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., will be at City Hall on North Front Street in Senatobia.

A City Hall official confirmed that there would be one ballot, but on each ballot, the voter would have the opportunity to vote for or against two separate items:

    *      Whether to permit the sale and the receipt, storage and transportation for the purposes of sale, of alcoholic beverages and liquors.
    *      Whether to permit the sale and the receipt, storage and transportation for purposes of sale, of light wine with an alcoholic content of not more than five percent by weight and beer of an alcoholic content of not more than eight percent by weight.

In April 2012, the Mississippi State Legislature passed Senate Bill 2497, which enables cities with a population of 5,000 to hold city elections to determine whether sales will be permitted within city limits.

The City of Senatobia is home to more than 8,000 people, according to the 2010 Census.

The previous state law required all alcohol votes to be held countywide.

I think it's sad how ignorant some people are that they think we're going to get "big" restaurants here when Southaven and Batesville already have those chains they're thinking of. The increased tax revenues from the liquor stores, which is really all we're going to get, will be spent on extra police to try and offset the increased crime.

The only thing that the "prohibition" law in Tate County has accomplished is making the counties adjacent to us richer, as anyone that wants alcohol only needs to make a 15 minute drive. It will never happen, but the tax revenue could be used to reduce the out of control property tax rates in this county. Once a government has enacted a tax amount, it is there no matter the revenue increase. At least it could help Senatobia lure more decent restaraunts, as they now stay away because of the dry conditions.
