Police Chief Undra Todd made several recommendations to the Coldwater Board of Alderman at their October 7 meeting. One recommendation was to hire academy-certified officer Ricky Ray who lives in Senatobia. The Board moved to hire Ray as the Coldwater Police Department has lost two officers over the last several months. Another recommendation was to send officer John Grace to the academy. Todd said that Grace is nearing the time limit for completing his training. The board approved his attendance so he can continue serving Coldwater as an officer. Chief Todd also requested the board to give Sergeant Mark Sansom a 4% raise. Sansom was promoted in May from officer to Sergeant, but with that promotion he did not receive a raise. Alderman Vernon Jackson was concerned with budget issues since the board had already approved their budget regarding personnel and suggested they table the issue for further discussion. Chief Todd stated that he had reviewed his budget and a 4% raise was within his budget. Jackson again voiced his fears that a raise for one officer might affect other officers since they were already having a hard time keeping officers with surrounding areas paying more. The Mayor stated that with Sansom's promotion comes additional responsibilities. He also stated that they have in their budget an assistant police chief, which they do not have, adding, "[Hiring an assistant chief is] not in the cards right now and probably won't be for the next nine months" since it had not been in the last three years. Edwards also stated that an approximately 4% raise would be relatively 40% of what the increase would be for an assistant police chief. He also suggested to the board that they follow Chief Todd's recommendation. Alderman Donzella Jefferies made a motion that they table the issue. It will be brought up again at the next board meeting. Also reported by Chief Todd for the Police Department, 19 citations were written for the month of September and the Fire Department reported three calls, all within the city. All board members were present except Harold Davis.
